Walter F. George Lake Hunting Regulations
1. A permit is required to hunt on Corps of Engineers managed property at Walter F.
George Lake and may be obtained from the Resource Management Office (RMO) in Ft.
Gaines, GA. The permit is valid for one year from the date of purchase. The state of
Georgia manages four leased Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) on the lake as well. For
information on these areas contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife

2. All state and federal hunting regulations and seasons apply in addition to Corps of
Engineers regulations. Hunter orange must be worn (size prescribed by each state) while
deer hunting in each state, including archery seasons. Hunters under the age of 16 do not
require a permit, but must be accompanied and closely supervised by a responsible adult
with a permit. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to be familiar with the Corps
regulations contained herein, as well as any state and federal regulations as applicable.
3. With the exception of state authorized alligator hunting, night hunting is prohibited on
Corps managed property.
4. With the exception of waterfowl retrieval, hunting with dogs is prohibited on Corps
managed property.
5. BAITING IS NOT ALLOWED ON CORPS MANAGED PROPERTY.
6. Off-road operation, driving around a barricade, and the operation of any non-licensed
vehicles, such as motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, to include four wheelers, three
wheelers, and utility vehicles (side by sides) are prohibited on Corps managed property. DO
NOT BLOCK GATES AND ENTRANCES.
7. No hunting or shooting is permitted within 300 feet (100 yards) of any dock, dwelling,
business, church, school, recreation area, dam, powerhouse, public walking/biking trail or
public road. Note: See distance requirements in section 18 for waterfowl hunting.
8. Only climbing, ladder, or other temporary stands that are not permanently attached to
trees are allowed. Stands must be removed from Corps managed property when not
occupied.
9. Hunting is permitted only in those “Hunting Areas” specified below in this regulation
and, from boat only, for waterfowl on the waters of Walter F. George Lake. Hunting is
prohibited on all Corps land, including islands that are outside of the specified “Hunting

Areas”, unless designated as a state WMA or certain areas of the Eufaula NWR.
10. The Corps of Engineers property line is designated by 4-inch RED BANDS painted on
trees or posts facing the property line. More information on this line may be obtained at the
Corps of Engineers RMO in Ft. Gaines, GA. Permission to cross private property to reach
adjacent Corps property can only be granted by the property owner.
11. The possession of firearms is prohibited on Corps property, except as permitted for
hunting purposes during authorized hunting seasons.
12. Hunting or shooting air guns on Corps property is not allowed.
13. At the conclusion of the spring turkey hunting season, or before, please submit the
hunter survey card to the RMO. The survey may be mailed or brought in.
14. ARCHERY:
A. Long bows, recurve bows, and compound bows only. CROSSBOWS ARE NOT
ALLOWED ON CORPS MANAGED LAND, unless the individual has a qualifying
disability, accompanied by a doctor's letter.
B. Arrows for deer or feral hog must be broadhead type.
15. BIG GAME:
A. Big game hunting is limited to archery only.
B. Deer and turkey are classified as big game.
C. FIREARMS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE IN POSSESSION WHILE BIG GAME
HUNTING.
16. SMALL GAME:
A. Small game hunters may use shotguns or archery. Only the use and possession of
shotgun ammunition loaded with No. 6 shot or smaller is permitted. TURKEY IS NOT
CONSIDERED SMALL GAME.
B. Small game includes dove, quail, rabbits, and squirrels.
C. Trapping is not permitted on Corps managed property.
D. Hunting, chasing, harassing, or killing of bear, beaver, coyote, fox, opossum, raccoon,
cougar, groundhog, otter, mink, skunk, bobcat, and all non-game wildlife is prohibited on
Corps managed property.
17. FERAL HOGS:
Feral hogs may be taken by small game hunters using small game shotgun ammunition or
archery, waterfowl hunters using waterfowl ammunition, and big game hunters using
archery.
18. WATERFOWL HUNTING:
A. Waterfowl hunting is permitted in the specified “Hunting Areas”, state WMAs, and
certain areas of the Eufaula NWR, and, from boats only, on waters of Walter F. George
Lake at least 600 feet (200 yards) from docks, structures, vessels, roads, public parks,
public walking/biking trails, and other developed areas such as subdivisions. Except as
noted in refuge brochures, waterfowl hunting is prohibited on the Eufaula NWR, including
those portions of Walter F. George Lake lying within refuge boundaries.

B. Waterfowl hunting from land is prohibited outside of the specified “Hunting Areas.
Note: See regulations for state WMAs and certain areas of the Eufaula NWR to see where
hunting from land may be allowed.
C. A Corps permit IS REQUIRED to hunt waterfowl on all areas of the lake, except the
Eufaula NWR. This includes all navigable waters accessible by boat with an outboard
motor. All annual seasons, limits and non-toxic shot requirements apply according to state
and/or federal regulations. In addition, all waterfowl hunters age 16 and older are required
to have a Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (duck stamp), Harvest
Information Permit (H. I. P), and State Waterfowl Conservation Permit (duck stamp) in their
possession, in addition to their state hunting license. Regulations vary for Georgia and
Alabama.
D. State boundaries are delineated by the green buoys which mark the west side of the river
channel.
19. ALLIGATOR HUNTING:
A Corps permit IS REQUIRED to hunt alligators on all areas of the lake. This applies only
to individuals with the alligator harvest or possession tag. Alligator hunting is NOT
ALLOWED on the Eufaula NWR. Alligator hunting is to be conducted in accordance with
all applicable state and federal regulations.
20. Failure to comply with any of the above conditions may result in permanent revocation
or restrictions of hunting privileges on Corps managed property.

1. DAM SITE: 180 acres in east central Henry County, AL, located north of Henry County Road 46,
west of Powerhouse Road, and south of the dam and dike. Coordinates: N31°36'55.13"

2. HIGHLAND: 359 acres in east central Henry County, AL, located north of Henry County Road
46, east of Henry County Road 97, south of Highland Park, and is bordered on the east by Walter F.

3. HATCHECHUBBEE CREEK SOUTH: 55 acres in southeast Russell County, AL, located south
of Hatchechubbee Creek and West of AL Hwy 165. Coordinates: N32°8'21.615" W85°4'8.221"
4. HATCHECHUBBEE CREEK NORTH: 51 acres in southeast Russell County, AL, located north
of Hatchechubbee Creek and West of AL Hwy 165. Coordinates: N32°8'39.014" W85°4'2.348"
HUNTING AREAS IN GEORGIA:
1. GRAVEL POINT: 100 acres in west-central Clay County, GA, located west of GA Hwy 39, west
of Loki Drive and south of Gravel Point Road. Coordinates: N31°38'49.578" W85°3'2.729"
2. CENTRAL: 122 acres in southwest Stewart County, GA located north of Rood Creek.

3. HANNAHATCHEE SOUTH: 85 acre strip north of GA Hwy 39 Spur, bordering the east bank of
the Chattahoochee River. Coordinates: N32°9'14.004" W85°2'1.275"
4. HANNAHATCHEE CREEK: 265 acres in northwest Stewart County, GA, located north of
