ADMISSION TO HONORS COURSES
Honors courses are designed for Honors College members; however, any TTU student with a GPA of 3.0 or
better is eligible to enroll in an Honors section as space permits.
For more information, or to request a seat in an Honors section, please contact the Honors College:
McClellan Hall, Room 101 | (806) 742-1828 | [email protected]
GRADUATION WITH HONORS DESIGNATIONS
Students must complete 24 hours in Honors coursework to graduate from Texas Tech University with the
transcript designation “with Honors from the Honors College.”
A student who wishes to graduate with the transcript designation “with Highest Honors from the Honors
College” must complete an Honors thesis and 30 hours of Honors coursework. Permission from the Honors
College is required before beginning the Honors thesis.
Students must maintain a TTU GPA of 3.5 to remain in the Honors College and graduate with either of the
above Honors designations.
Students intending to graduate with either designation must file an “Intent to Graduate” form with the Honors
College one year prior to the graduation date. Honors College designations are listed on the transcript and the
diploma. These are in addition to other distinctions graduates may earn, such as Latin Honors (e.g., Summa
cum laude, Magna cum laude, and Cum laude).

Appointment Scheduling Information:
Honors advising is focused on assisting with the identification of Honors course options and strategizing completion plans for your
Honors requirements. Please make arrangements to connect with your primary major advisor to discuss your overall degree plan.
Honors advising appointments will be conducted in-person at McClellan Hall. Not all Honors students are required to meet with an
Honors advisor, but all are welcome. If you are part of an Honors population that *is* required to meet with an Honors advisor, or
would simply like to connect with an Honors advisor, please use Raider Success Hub (RSH) at success.ttu.edu, to self-schedule an
appointment time.
Students admitted this Spring 2024 for the Honors VIP Admissions Cohort are required to schedule an advising appointment
with Kourtney Rodriguez. **Please make this appointment with Kourtney using the Honors College VIP advising option in
RSH.**
Honors NEW current/transfer Honors students (admitted to the College for a Fall 2024 start) are required to schedule an
advising appointment with an advisor. An Honors advising hold will be placed until the student schedules an appointment via
RSH.
Honors students who are not making steady progress towards Honors course requirements will be contacted and required to
schedule an advising appointment. An Honors advising hold will be placed until the student schedules an appointment via
RSH.
Honors students who are on track to graduate within the next academic year are strongly encouraged, though not required,
to schedule an advising appointment. No Honors advising hold should be placed.
Updated 08.22.2024 | 5
Honors students who are pursing 2+2 pre-health prerequisites and intend to complete Honors requirements on an
accelerated path before application to professional schools are strongly encouraged, though not required, to schedule an
advising appointment. No Honors advising hold should be placed. **Please make this appointment with Kelsey Kimzey using
the Honors College 2+2 advising option in RSH.**
All other Honors students are invited to make an appointment to discuss Honors-related advising questions. No Honors
advising hold should be placed.
Course Planning and Registration Information:
All university classes for Fall 2024 should be loaded on Raiderlink approximately March 4
th
. Honors and HE+ sections offered during
the fall semester will be listed in the Fall 2024 Course booklet which should be available to access here approximately March 4
th
. *The
Honors course booklet is subject to revision as Honors sections are added, cancelled, or otherwise modified.*
Unless specified as application-based, all Honors courses will be unrestricted to any student with an Honors cohort code.
Prerequisites required for specific classes are in place as indicated by the university and the individual teaching departments.
**Exceptions include FYE courses that are only for incoming first-year Honors students as well as sections H01 and H02 of CHEM 1307
which are also only for incoming first-year students.**
Please note that Visual Schedule Builder will not always pull in Honors course sections accurately. We recommend you use the Plan
Ahead Tool in the Add/Drop classes portal or the Section Search Toolin conjunction with the Honors Course Bookletto build your
schedule manually. Additionally, course options earmarked as Honors Enhanced (HE+) can only be identified in the online Honors
Course Booklet, so be sure to reference it frequently.
You can find a sample degree plan/course sequence for your major in the TTU Undergraduate Catalog (catalog.ttu.edu) or find course
requirements in your DegreeWorks portal.
Always include your R# in any correspondence with a TTU advisor so that we can help you more efficiently.
Waitlists/Full Sections:
The Honors College no longer manages in-house waitlists for any Honors courses with the exception of the limited application-based
courses. All other Honors sections will be opened at the time of registration for all students with an Honors cohort code. If a section
fills, the student should add themselves to the Raiderlink waitlist for the desired section AND then immediately register for an
alternate, non-Honors section of the same course OR another alternate course that would be acceptable for degree sequencing. It is
imperative to register for an alternate course as soon as possible in the event that the student’s name never comes up on the
Raiderlink waitlist. Being on a waitlist does NOT guarantee that a seat will become open to you later.
*If* a space opens in a full course and you are the next person on the Raiderlink waitlist, the Raiderlink system should send
information and instructions to your TTU email address. You will have a specific window of time to take action in registering for your
offered seat, so it is essential that you check your TTU email daily.
Do not contact instructors of courses for overrides. Raiderlink will track enrollments and notify waitlisted students of available seats in
a fair and orderly manner. Advisors are not authorized to override the automated Raiderlink waitlist system even if a professor were
to approve you for their course.
Please let us know if questions arise. You are welcome to reach out to an individual Honors advisor or to us at
We look forward to serving you in your preparations for the Fall 2024 semester, and beyond!

Prerequisite: Completion of HONS 3300-H01
An Honors thesis is a long formal research paper or written creative work that conforms to the journal publishing standards in a
chosen field. The Honors thesis program consists of two semester-long research and writing courses, HONS 3300, followed by HONS
4300. Students do not meet in a classroom, but instead work independently, and in concert with a student-selected thesis director,
and the HONS 3300/4300 instructor. The thesis director must be a Texas Tech University faculty member. With guidance, students
work through a series of steps from the development of an argument to a completed thesis. In these two courses, students master
the following skills: note-taking, effective outlining, integrating primary and secondary sources, document formatting, utilizing
constructive feedback, argumentative and/or creative writing, and revising. This second semester of Honors thesis culminates with
Thesis Day, a celebration in which each student gives a brief presentation about their project (spring semester only). Students who
successfully complete an Honors thesis will graduate from the Honors College with the distinction of Highest Honors.

This course examines the scientific basis in various aspects of popular culture. It is no stretch to say that superheroes and super villains
have become part of our modern mythology. We will consider the scientific basis behind superheroes and super villains. In addition,
this course involves other topics as well including artificial intelligence, time travel, the history of science fiction, and science fiction
film through the lens of both science and popular culture. How has popular culture, science, and history treated artificial intelligence
and time travel? Science fiction films usually have a basis in a type of scientific method and attempt to answer the question where is
the science in science fiction film? We will be using sequential art/comics and popular scientific texts as our basis of study. Students
will have the opportunity to use science in the creation of their own superhero or super villain.

In 2021 Mystery Science Theater 3000 launched another Kickstarter campaign to bring back the show for a 13th season this time
without a sponsoring network. This time the creators of the show would produce the show on their own online theater called The
Gizmoplex for a 2022 debut. They again raised enough funds to make a 13th season. The 2015 reboot of the television program
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) became the largest crowd-funded video project in history at that time. No small feat for a
show that had its last broadcast years ago in 1999. MST3K, a low-budget comedy program that made fun of and riffed on bad movies,
aired on two major cable networks, one public access station, and produced a theatrical film in the span of eleven years (1988-1999).
The show developed a fanatical following and is now considered by fans and critics one of the funniest and smartest programs to ever
grace the small screen. In today’s transmedia world, the impact of riffing is all around us from mashups on YouTube to fan-created
cultures. This 4000-level seminar will focus on MST3K (and its various offshoots like RiffTrax. The Mads, Cinematic Titanic), its creators,
the history of riffing (which pre-dates MST3K), comedy writing, fandom, and taking one form of art and creating something new and
unique from it. The reboot Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return (2017) and the MST3K The Gauntlet (2018) were both a critical
succusses on Netflix and have a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This course will also examine in detail several films that were
riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Please note you are expected to watch terrible films and historical shorts that are politically
incorrect by today’s standards. This course contains sarcasm! This class is reading intensive and contains mature content.

If life does indeed imitate art, then the late, great critic and scholar Harold Bloom may be correct in claiming that Shakespeare
invented “the human.” Before Shakespeare, Bloom asserts, literary characters change mostly because their relationship to God or the
gods change. But Shakespeare wrote characters who change because their relationship to themselves change. Shakespeare’s
characters “reconceive themselves,” Bloom writes because they overhear themselves talking. “Self-overhearing is their royal road to
individuation.”
This course explores Shakespeare’s tragic plays and their treatment of the process and pitfalls of individuation. We will read Macbeth,
Othello, Hamlet, King Lear; and The Tempest to address the universal themes of ambition and human endurance, fatal desire and
sublimation, family heritages and dynamics, as well as the wish to live forever. We’ll complement our reading of Shakespeare with
readings from psychology, biology, and physics. We’ll read aloud together, so that our classroom comes alive with Shakespeare’s
language and characters and worlds. This class is reading and writing intensive.

This is a course in the application of critical and creative thinking in the exploration of the grand challenges facing humankind. Grand
challenges which include, but aren’t limited to, accelerating technologies, climate change, food insecurity, biothreats, economic
inequality, and government failure are both grand and challenging because they’re substantially more complex than routine
problems and, generally, require collective effort and agreement to resolve. The class will place special emphasis on the role of
technologies in the development of the grand challenges and the potential solutions that may derive from emerging technologies.
We will explore the scope of the grand challenges across international, national, regional, and local boundaries but place particular
emphasis on the “local”, or community, where each of us can participate in the collective effort to find solutions.

This course will introduce students to some of the world’s major religions. It will begin with the Abrahamic faiths, looking first at
Judaism, then Christianity and Islam. Afterwards we will move to Hinduism and Buddhism. The course will seek to explore the origins
of these religions, their core understanding of the divine and the role of mankind on earth. Religions, however, are more than simply
belief systemsthey are also very powerful political bodies and religious leaders often play central political roles. People such as
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, the Agha Khan, Mahatma
Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama are all political as well as religious figures. This course, after clearly introducing the religions, will explore
some of the political roles that many of the religions play in today’s world.

FALL 2024 HONORS ENHANCED COURSE [HE+] SECTIONS
HE+ courses are a great way to earn Honors credit! In HE+ courses, you’ll experience an honors
enrichment activity with your faculty member and other Honors students, in regular TTU
courses. Get ready for many more Honors opportunities to earn Honors credit in every major
even at the upper division!
If an Honors students enrolls in a designated HE+ section and successfully completes it (earning
a grade of B- or better in the class) and successfully completes the non-graded Honors
enrichment activity, that student will earn the number of general Honors credits associated
with the credit assigned to the course. For example: with HIST 2301-001, the Honors student
would earn 3 hours of Honors credit.
PLEASE NOTE that HE+ sections, regardless of level, only fulfill general Honors course
requirements (and do NOT fulfill the 3000-level and 4000-level seminar requirements).
With designated HE+ sections, there will be a HONS 0001 stand-alone no-credit course
associated with it. The student would enroll in the HONS 0001 section associated with the HE+
lecture section in order to be a part of the HE+ initiative.
Several more HE+ sections will be built and loaded in Raiderlink soon. The HE+ sections
currently built are noted in this booklet in the pages following this one, but there will be more!
We expect several more HE+ sections to be added in the coming days be sure to access
updated versions of this booklet for newly added courses.
The Honors College will contact all Honors students enrolled in each of the HE+ lecture sections
with instructions about adding the HONS 0001 no-credit course to your schedule.
