BEFORE SUMMER WELCOME
Our expert academic advisors place you in a preliminary set
of courses for the fall semester based on:
Your intended major;
ACT/SAT subscore in

MyMathTest (MMT) score;
High school transcripts;
College credit you have
already earned;
Course availability;
Course preferences you
provided on your New

COURSE SCHEDULE PLANNING WORKSHEET
BRING THIS PAGE WITH YOU TO SUMMER WELCOME
AVAILABILITY OF COURSES
Course availability varies from semester to semester.
When meeting with your advisor, keep an open mind
about alternate options to complete your first full
semester schedule (between 12 and 16 credit hours).
Collaboration between students and advisors is
essential to student success. If you have questions
about course placement, Summer Welcome is the best
time to ask your academic advisor.
You’ll also want to discuss elective courses with your
advisor because credits vary in schools or colleges.
In addition, the College of Arts and Science and
the School of Journalism have foreign language
requirements. Students with certain majors might
have been already placed in an appropriate level of a
foreign language. Others might wish to add a foreign
language.
FIGS AND YOUR SCHEDULE
If you have requested to participate in a Freshman
Interest Group (FIG), you are assigned three courses
designated for that FIG along with Interdisciplinary
studies 1001: FIGs Proseminar, a course taught by
a peer advisor and faculty member or staff person.
You must remain enrolled in at least one of the FIG
courses and the Proseminar in order to participate
in the FIG. If you have college credit for one or more
FIG courses or anticipate conflicts for other reasons,
talk to your advisor about your options.

PLACEMENT EXAMS
MATH PLACEMENT (REQUIRED)
MU uses the MyMathTest (MMT) assessment to place

targeted learning module to help you improve your score.

FUNDAMENTAL COURSES
Your advisor is your best resource for determining which
courses you should take. The courses you take now will help
prepare you for the rest of college while providing a crucial
foundation for your field of study. That’s why we encourage
students to satisfy basic English and math requirements
during freshman year.
MATH
Fluency in mathematics is a critical part of your college
education. Your MMT score (see Math Placement) tells
your advisor which math course will put you on the right
path. There are a variety of courses that can satisfy the
requirements.
ENGLISH
Written communication is fundamental to student success,
and we encourage all first-year students to take our
freshman English course, Exposition and Argumentation.
This course stresses writing as a process and gives due
attention to critical reading and thinking skills applicable to
all college classes.
UNDECIDED AND EXPLORING
If you are undecided about your major, that’s completely
fine! So are many of your peers. All schools and colleges have
an Undeclared option. If most of your interests fall within a
particular school or college, you should select that as your
major. Be sure to talk to your advisor about your options.
The rich diversity of course offerings at Mizzou allows you to
explore new topics and discover new interests. Your advisor
will help you select courses that can apply to a variety of
degree programs.
PREREQUISITES
The university will verify that you have met the required
prerequisites for any course in which you are enrolled. You
are responsible for providing an official transcript showing
the course and grade, and you might be dropped from your
course if you do not satisfy those requirements.
