COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN SERVICES
Montclair State University | The Graduate School
HOW DO I APPLY?
Applicants to all programs (doctoral, master’s, certification, certificate
and all non-degree) must complete a Graduate School application
online. To apply, go to montclair.edu/graduate/applications.
WHAT ARE MY APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND
WHERE DO I SEND THEM?
All application credentials (ofcial transcripts, standardized test scores,
letters of recommendation, etc.) must be submitted to The Graduate
School. Montclair State University graduates are not required to send
their Montclair State transcripts; The Graduate School requests them
directly. All of the credentials do not have to arrive at the same time.
Prospective students can submit credentials by mail, email, in person
or fax to our ofce. However, ofcial transcripts and standardized
test scores are not permitted to be faxed. All credentials are kept on
file for a maximum of one year and are automatically matched to an
application. Each degree program and certificate program has different
application requirements. To view the admissions credentials required
for your particular program, go to “Application Requirements and
Deadlines” at montclair.edu/graduate/requirements-deadlines.
IS THERE ANY SITUATION WHEN THE
STANDARDIZED TEST CAN BE WAIVED?
You may be eligible to waive one of the required standardized
tests. Please visit https://gradschool.montclair.edu/gradweb/forms/
testwaiver.php for eligibility. Fill out the form and click “submit.” Your
request will be processed once The Graduate School reviews your
credentials. In addition, certain programs implement or change their
GRE waivers each semester. For a current list of GRE waivers, please
visit “Application Requirements and Deadlines” at montclair.edu/
graduate/requirements-deadlines.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION DEADLINES?
The majority of our graduate programs DO NOT have specific
deadlines. For those programs without a specic deadline, The
Graduate School recommends that applicants submit their credentials
as early as possible. The Graduate School will not begin to review
your application until all of the materials are received. Registration
begins in April for the fall term and in November for the spring term;
thus, as the new semester approaches, courses will fill to capacity
and close. Early applicants are more likely to get the courses they
need. If your program has an application deadline, all application
requirements must be received by The Graduate School before
that deadline. To view program deadlines, visit montclair.edu/
graduate/requirements-deadlines.
CAN I PAY MY APPLICATION FEE ONLINE
OR DO I NEED TO PAY IT IN PERSON?
Application fees can be paid both online and in person. Applicants
indicate their preference for paying the non-refundable application
fee while completing the online application. After the application is
submitted and processed, a follow-up email is sent with additional
instructions based on the payment preference selected. Checks or
money orders should be made payable to Montclair State University.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE A DECISION?
Once the application is complete, The Graduate School will conduct a
preliminary review of all of the submitted materials. If the minimum
admission requirements have been met, your application will then
be forwarded for departmental review. Students are notified of all
admission decisions via email, followed by a letter from The Graduate
School. The length of this process varies by program, but The Graduate
School works to provide decisions in a timely manner.
CAN I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID?
Financial aid information can be obtained on The Ofce of Financial
Aid’s website: montclair.edu/nancial-aid or call 973-655-4461.
WHAT ARE THE TUITION AND FEES
FOR THE GRADUATE SCHOOL?

HOW TO APPLY: Guidelines and Tips From The Graduate School
Montclair State University | The Graduate School
Registration begins in April for the fall term
and in November for the spring term; thus, as the
new semester approaches, courses will
fill to capacity and close.
What are the minimum GRE/GMAT
scores required for admission?
There are no minimum scores set by The
Graduate School. We review the entire
application le. For example, higher test
scores may compensate for a lower GPA and
vice versa.
Can I enroll on a part-time basis?
Many of our graduate students attend
Montclair State on a part-time basis. To
accommodate these students, most of our
classes are scheduled in the late afternoons,
evenings and on Saturdays. Most courses
meet once a week in the fall and spring
semesters. Summer sessions usually include
day and evening classes which meet more
than once a week. Please keep in mind that
although the majority of our programs can be
completed part-time, there are several that
require full-time enrollment.
Will my application be
considered if I haven’t taken my
GRE/GMAT/MAT/IELTS yet?
Not if the exam is a requirement for the
program you are pursuing. The Graduate
School does not review incomplete
applications. All credentials must be on file
before an application is reviewed. Some of
our programs have standardized test waivers.
Please visit our website for more information.
What is the most important part
of the application?
No single part of the application is the most
important. When reviewing an application,
admission decisions are made based on
all the materials submitted, i.e. educational
background and grades, work experience
(if any), standardized test scores, letters
of recommendation and the statement of
objectives.
When and how do I know if
I’ve been accepted?
Once the application is complete, The
Graduate School will conduct a preliminary
review of all of the submitted materials. If the
minimum admission requirements have been
met, your application will then be forwarded
for departmental review. Applicants are
notified of all admission decisions via email,
followed by a letter from The Graduate School.
The length of this process varies by program
but The Graduate School works to provide
decisions in a timely manner.
How long will you keep my
application materials on file?
We will keep your application materials on
file for one year if you do not complete the
application, if you are not admitted or if you do
not enroll in classes. If you choose to reapply
after your application has been purged, you
will need to resubmit all required materials.
Does Montclair State offer
financial assistance?
If you are a U.S. citizen/resident and you are
planning to apply for a student loan, you must
submit a Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is located online
and can be accessed from our website at:
montclair.edu/nancial-aid. If you have any
questions about the financial aid process,
please contact the Ofce of Financial Aid at
Montclair State University, 973-655-4461.
Does Montclair State offer
assistantships or scholarships?
A limited number of graduate assistantships
and graduate scholarships are available for
all students, including international students,
and are awarded annually through The
Graduate School. Please check our website for
requirements and deadlines.
If I studied at an institution outside of
the U.S., what educational background
is needed to be eligible to apply to The
Graduate School?
ALL foreign transcripts must receive a
COURSE-BY-COURSE evaluation from a
member of the National Association of
Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
Please contact a NACES member to receive
an Application for Evaluation of Foreign
Credentials. You must include instructions
on the application to send a copy of the
evaluation to The Graduate School at
Montclair State University. You must provide
the NACES member you select with copies
of transcripts from all previous educational
institutions and certified English translations.
An official evaluation sent to Montclair State
University from the NACES member you
selected is the only requirement. Please
visit naces.org/members.html for more
information. The TOEFL/IELTS test is also an
application requirement of all students whose
native language is not English and whose
degree was obtained in a country where
English is not the official language.

The estimated fall/spring costs provided by the Financial Aid Ofce
are known as the Estimated Cost of Attendance. The Estimated Cost
of Attendance ESTIMATES charges for tuition, fees, books, supplies,
transportation and miscellaneous expenses for two semesters.
Your bill will represent actual charges for each semester (tuition, fees
and Red Hawk Dollars).
The explanation for the difference between the Estimated Cost of
Attendance and the actual charges/bill is that the federal government
allows students to receive financial aid up to the cost of attendance
which includes indirect expenses.
Step 5. Make a Plan to Pay the Bill
Financial aid deducted from the bill is not credited to your account
until after the add/drop period.
Student Accounts waits for nancial aid payments before late
charges begin.
Bill balances after nancial aid deductions are due when indicated
on the monthly billing statement.
Step 6. Review your Financial Aid Awards
Students in graduate degree programs can borrow additional funds
