THE
FREEMAN
GRANT,__
The
Freeman Grant is a five-year grant
that Ursinus College received to
strengthen its East Asian Studies
Program
A portion
of
the Grant has been allotted
for acquiring materials to develop Myrin
Library's collection in East Asian Studies.
Professors Hugh Clark, Steven Hood,
Miho I wakuma, and Matthew Mizenko
have been hard at work reviewing books,
journals, films, and online resources to
select for inclusion into the Library's col-
lection.
Dr. Mizenko is thrilled about the prospects
of
acquiring materials to research film
in
East Asia. "Thanks to the support
of
the
Freeman Grant, the East Asian Studies
Program has been able to offer EAS 299,
East Asian Film, in conjunction with a col-
loquium on East Asian
Film
that will bring
four speakers to campus this semester.
Freeman funds have
been
used to acquire
every available academic
book
on
the
films
of
China, Hong
Kong
, Taiwan,
South Korea, and Japan, thereby making
our collection in Myrin the equal
of
any
collection in the coun
on
those terms.
We
have also been building a collection
of
East Asian films on videotape and
DVD
that is impressive in both breadth and
depth. These resources will make it possi-
ble to offer the East Asian Film course in
the future."
An
important indexing tool to support re-
search has also been added to the collec-
tion. Dr. Mizenko noted: "Freeman funds
have permitted us to subscribe to the
online Bibliography
of
Asian Studies,
which has been instrumental in helping me
prepare the film course, while also provid-
ing
an
invaluable resource for
my
teaching
and research in general."
The
Freeman Grant will continue to sup-
port
development
of
the Library's collec-
tion in the coming years.
Dr
. Mizenko
said, "during the summer, I will be seeking
to strengthen our collections on Japanese
language, literature and culture, while also
looking into the acquisition
of
texts and
reference works in Japanese that will be
helpful for the students in our rapidly
growing Japanese language
program"

MYRIN'S
FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT
DOCUMENTS
PROGRAM PASSES
INSPECTION
Did you know that the Myrin Library
is
a
of
its 40th year in the Federal Depository
federal government document depository? Library Program.
The law
of
the United States, as found in
title 44, chapter
19
of
the U.S. Code, re-
quires that federal agencies make all their
publications available to the Government
Printing Office (GPO) for distribution to
depository libraries. There are approxi-
mately 1,400 depository libraries around
the country,
half
of
which are academic
libraries.
Over spring break, an inspector from the
GPO visited the Library to ensure that the
Library's government document program
is
being managed according to the in-
structions prescribed by the GPO. Over-
all, the Library received high compli-
ments for the management
of
its program.
Myrin has been a depository since 1963
and, in October, will
be
marking the start
Although there are thousands
of
materials
printed
by
the GPO, Myrin has special-
ized their collection to include publica-
tions
by
such agencies as:
Smithsonian Institution
Census Bureau
Department
of
Education
Department
of
the Interior
Department
of
Health and Human Ser-
vices
Department
of
Commerce
Department
of
Labor
Central Intelligence Agency
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Many government documents can
be
found through the Library's online cata-
log at http://myrin.ursinus.edu. A simple
keyword search
combining a par-
ticular subject with the term "gpo" will
retrieve government documents on that
topic. For example, typing:
poverty and gpo
in the Catalog QuickSearch fieldbox on
the Library's homepage and then clicking
"keyword" will retrieve results describing
resources from a variety
of
governmental
agencies such as the Deptartment
of
Housing and Urban Development, the
Census Bureau, and the House
of
Repre-
sentatives Committee on Hunger.
M yrin' s Reference Librarians can assist
you with finding other government docu-
ments-please
ask at the Information
Desk for assistance.
