Soon your faces will become familiar to us. Please accept our invitation to the annual
association meeting. Most owners will be there and you will, at the very least, be entertained
as members convene to discuss lake activities, review what has happened and what will
happen, as well as vote for new officers and board members. An enticement to attend, not
only to witness the event, but to be the first to view items to be sold at our little T-Shirt Shack.
The 2018 winning t-shirt will be for sale as well as nifty t-shirt pillows. It will also be your first
chance to purchase raffle tickets for an awesome prize. All profits go to our Invasive Species
Fund to keep our waters clean and free of unwanted weeds and/or critters.
Many new cottage owners from years past are now full-time residents and enjoy the lake year
round. This often happens when one reaches retirement age and no longer has to go home
on Sunday night! One such owner is Tom and Ashley Farmen. The Farmens have been
chosen as the first “PEOPLE OF INTEREST ON CRESCENT LAKE”. They consented to an
interview. Their response to a random bunch of questions tossed at them will delight you!
Find this splendid article at the end of your CL Chronicles.
Tom has written the following. He extends his writing to those who probably already share his
feelings and especially to our new owners who will soon understand the friendship of a lake!!

Annual Meeting Minutes
1. President, Kevin Brenker, called the meeting to order, lead the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced CLA officers.
There were 86 members in attendance. He stated a reminder about boating safety: non-motorized boats have the
right of way, but should be careful not to block the “narrows” and keep to the sides of the Lake whenever possible.
2. A Moment of Silence was observed for those members who had passed in the last year: Brandy Clemons, niece of
Diane Clemons, Gerald Couto, life partner of Jan Harrington; Myrtle Spaulding, wife of Bob Spaulding; Werner
Rudenfeldt, husband of Geraldine.
3. Secretary’s Report: 2016 Annual Meeting Minutes sent by e-mail and distributed prior to the meeting; Motion made
to accept report, seconded and passed unanimously.
Betsy Allen noted Membership Forms need to be filled out to keep us up-to-date on contact information. The Directory
was emailed this Spring and will be published again in the Fall with updated information. Thank you to Patty LaHaise
for personally welcoming new owners and giving them a welcome packet, which includes information about
membership in CLA, NH laws and recommendations on water safety and quality. There were 17 sales to new owners
since the last annual meeting.
4. Treasurers Report: Greta Perry, Treasurer, distributed Financial Statement dated 5/31/17 for reviewed.
Motion made to accept report, seconded and passed unanimously.
5. Welcome and Introduction to New Owners: Michael & Susan Mulhern, 206 Crescent Lake Road; Christopher &
Amy Lavina, 178 Crescent Lake Road; Francis & Erin Kuehn, 100 Crescent Lake Road; Paul & Maria Antinori, 14
Shorewood Estates Road; Mark Limoges, 108 Crescent Lake Road; Brian & Tanya Boardman, 318 Crescent Lake
Road; Wilbert & Brenda Babbitt, 25 Lakeside Drive; Mark & Michele Welch, 46 Anderson Road; Theodore Sanford, 89
East Shore Drive; Carla Mora, 44 Emerson Road; Melissa Francoeur & Justin Davis, 42 Emerson Road; Angela
Buckley, 10 Whites Way; Alan & Deborah Brown, Tom & Sally MacPhee, 34 Emerson Road; David & Beverly Daigle,
21 Lakeside Drive; Stephen & Sharon Mikucki, 44 Page Road; Zendon and Sarah Robinson, 9 Lake Road.
6. Election of Officers: Moved and seconded to nominate for re-election Tim Perry, Director; Tim Grinaski, Director;
Betsy Allen, Secretary; each for a three year term (July 2017-July 2020)
Passed unanimously.
7. REPORTS
AIS Kevin Brenker asked the membership to be diligent in watching the Lake for any invasive species and report
them. Crescent Lake is one of few NH lakes that remains clean of AIS. The Lake Host program continues to be our
“watchdog” for all craft entering and exiting the Lake. We currently have 5-6 paid Lake Hosts and 6-7 volunteers.
New Point Person is Bob Woolner. Gary and Judy Robinson continue to report payroll.
NH Law change dictates that all craft must be drained when leaving any body of water. All boats should be launched
at the public boat ramp. We need to inform our renters to use the boat ramp, as well as the correct counter clockwise
motoring direction around the Lake.
Kevin thanked Rod McLeod, Dave Sloan and Ziggy Lisischeff for maintenance and deployment of the lighthouse.

SPRING 2018
Water Quality Stan Rastallis reported that water testing is peformed every two weeks and continues to be good
quality, however, clarity is not, due to rain. In answer to a question, Stan stated that the mussels keep the lake clean
and should not be removed unless open, and the lilly pads should remain undisturbed. Leaves can be removed.
Dam Tim Perry, Dam Keeper, reported that the Dam, which is a non-menacing dam and owned by CLA, was
inspected by NH engineer last Fall. Four recommendations have been made: (1) Annual Operational Report must be
submitted to the State, (2) concrete needs repair, (3) crack across dam needs repair, (4) 60 ft. earthen berm needs
tree removal (10-12) and reshaped. Tim has filed the Operational Report and it has been accepted. The concrete
repairs and crack can be repaired easily using the method of repair approved by the engineer. It was moved,
seconded and passed unanimously to give the CLA Board authority to obtain bids on professional tree work, to use
CLA funds to get the trees cut and removed.
T-Shirts Diane Brenker reported that Tom Sebastian’s design won the 2017 contest. Thank you to Gary and Judy
Robinson for providing space for the T-Shirt Shack.
Maps Kevin thanked Charlie Clauss for updating maps and to Mike and Diane Walker for donating the printing of the
maps.
Chronicles Kevin Brenker thanked Colleen Kaftan for her past dedication to the Chronicles, and to Nancy LeBlanc,
editor, for the latest excellent edition.
Website Kevin thanked Larry McCluskey for keeping our website up to date.
Picnic Mary Beth Gilpen with Nancy Lablanc and Patty LaHaise, chairs, reported that sign up sheets are being posted
for help with kids games, raffle. Susan Mulhern will chair the Basket Raffle. Liz Grinaski and Bob Mumford will
organize Kayak/Canoe races. New this year: face painting and guess jars. The Boat Parade will be led by Charlie
Hicking and flares will be available. Motion made, seconded and passed unanimously to use CLA funds for picnic
expenses.
5K Run/Walk Rich Maynes reported the Run/Walk is scheduled to be held on Sunday, 9/3/17, starting at the Boat
Ramp. We average $1000 raised for Homes for our Troops. Race T-shirts will again be donated by Kevin and
Stephanie Fallon.
Golf Tournament 7/15/17 Dave Sloan reported that there may be changes in cost and location of the tournament due
to new management at the Golf Course. He will announce definite details soon.
OLD BUSINESS
Regarding speeding on Crescent Lake Road, Dave Levin reported that the Town of Acworth, not State of NH, posts
the 25MPH speed limit. He asked that someone attend a selectmen’s meeting to ask that the road be posted for
20MPH, and that three signs be installed on the road.
NEW BUSINESS
Lake Dredging Kevin Brenker reported that he called NH DES. He was told that dredging is almost never approved,
but that they offered to come and inspect Crescent Lake and make recommendations. Kevin will follow up. Gail
Sloan noted that she did get a permit to dredge years ago and would like to be involved.
Boater Safety Barry Caravan would like to form a committee to address boater safety on Crescent Lake.
Meeting was adjourned at 11:55 am.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR…………
Labor&Day&Weekend&2017&
Canoe Races by Bob Mumford
The Crescent Lake Association capped off the summer of
2017 with a Labor Day weekend packed with activity! The
CLA picnic is the main event of the weekend and was once
again hosted at Silver Beach, the home of Dick and Jane
Desbien. A beautiful sunny afternoon brought together
friends and family from around the lake to share the, music
and laughter of a summer ending celebration. Many thanks
to the Desbiens, the Caravan Family, Mary Beth Gilpin and
the many volunteers who made the afternoon possible.

The 2017 Crescent Lake Canoe Race was held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 10 am- a cold
40 degree start to the day, but the wind wasn’t strong enough to tip anyone over. “Thank you”s go
to Mary-Beth Gilpin(who raced also!) and her organized committee for providing refreshments for
racers and spectators(Lorraine Dion doing the honors nicely), and to Tim Grinaski and Michael for
getting up early and placing the orange race buoys along the course and then after racing
themselves, Tim and Duncan Phyfe picking them up and delivering them for storage.
Liz Grinaski and Bob Mumford signed up racers on entry sheets. We had 12 canoes racing, 4
more than last year. Maybe more next year? The Women’s race was the closest of all 4 divisions,
with the top two canoes only 2 (TWO) seconds apart. (19:28 over 19:30) For results and a photo

SPRING 2018
Who Knew? Sestercentennial Means 250
th
Birthday.
After at least two years of preparation, our beloved tiny town of Acworth was in full celebratory mode on August 11 and
12 of 2017. The many festive events commemorated the 250
th
anniversary of Acworth’s founding and the party proved
a roaring success. The Acworth Players offered two performances of “Inn the Middle of Nowhere,” a comedy about city
folks taking over a country inn to the acceptance and enthusiasm of the locals. That was an appropriate metaphor for
Crescent Lake’s participation in the fun on Saturday, August 12. We built a whimsical (to say the least) float to join in
the parade, which also featured an impressive array of floats from Acworth’s many active but historic clubs. Some
really nice hardware (in the form of farm and construction gear, antique cars, and wagons) joined the lineup along with
beautiful horses, a huge and handsome dog, and much more. Fire and rescue squads from Acworth, Unity, Lempster,
Goshen, and other towns turned out en masse, making us hope there wouldn’t be an emergency anywhere in the
surrounding area.
Our charming float featured two very large inflatable ducks, which were actually hard to place together on the platform
without making it look obscene. The ducks were surrounded by many other artifacts of life at the lake: fishing poles,
paddles, skis, loons, and a cute little mermaid—all against the backdrop of a blanket made of a whole CLA t-shirt
collection. You should have seen Nancy LeBlanc clutching one of the ducks outside her car window after it blew off
Ray’s truck on the way up the hill!
And we represented the lake well, with a small crowd of squirtgun-wielding walkers in snorkels and floaty tubes and a
couple of riders in the truck (which also contained a large inflatable shark). We had a supply of goldfish crackers in
snack packs, which we shared with all the kiddies who lined the route.
CLA had a booth at the fair on the church green as well, with info about our programs and CLA merch for sale. To top
off the excitement, Trina Janeczek’s grandson Aidan WON the raffle for a mountain bike, which he had been coveting
all day!
Speeches, songs, barbecues and breaking down the booths ensued, and I’m pretty sure everyone slept well after
such a happy day. Stay tuned for the Tercentennial in just 49 years!
submitted by Colleen Kaftan
Ah, Acworth’s 250th celebration of their founding!
What fun we had. Colleen provided materials and
work space, Stosh provided the trailer, and the rest
was swindled from her two cohorts, Nancy LeBlanc
and Betsy Allen. Our creation was hauled to the
parade site behind Ray LeBlanc’s truck.
Unfortunately, he didn’t realized that the big rubber
ducky would choose to fly off the float. Wifey to the
rescue, holding the lucky duck out the driver’s
window, the float was successfully reconstructed

And take a closer look at this.....you will NOT find this in our lake today and hopefully
never................
This is the dreaded milfoil plant. This, along with other invasive species, will determine
the health of our beloved lake. We need to continue being vigilant and report any
suspicious plants to a Lake Host………….
Lake Hosts are trained by NH Lakes Association and
help us keep nasty things out of Crescent Lake.
Volunteers/ paid hosts are at least age 17, able to
conduct a complete boat inspection.
Our Lake Hosts protect and prevent the spread of
aquatic nuisance species. We owe them our
appreciation, respect and support. Talk to them if you
have questions!
We must all work together to keep our water clean and our investment here protected.
Kevin Brenker, CLA president and AIS Committee point person, has provided the following:
ISSUE 24
ACWORTH-UNITY NH
SPRING 2018
Keeping Crescent Lake Clean - A Practice in Mutual Dependency
Kevin Brenker, Aquatic Invasive Species Committee, Point Person
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services lists nearly 1,000 lakes and rivers in the state,
each extending the benefit of “public access” for anglers, boaters, kayakers and water enthusiasts of every
stripe. Public access grants the ability to visit a body of water, enjoy the day and perhaps visit another
community and another body of water tomorrow.
The rise in the popularity of “paddle-craft”, the kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, etc has exponentially grown
the rates of “day boaters” to every lake and river in the state, and surrounding states. Anglers, whose
passion for finding the right location and the right lure(s) to catch the “big one” have always found Crescent
Lake a good destination for a day trip.
All this adds up to increased vulnerability - as the incident of invasive species “finds” has increased over the
past 15 years, so to has our local exposure to plant or animal species, foreign to Crescent Lake (or any other
local river or lake) to migrate into our typically very clean waters. Should this occur, Crescent Lake
Association will have to act quickly, with coordination from state resources, to mitigate the impact of a species
taking hold on our lake. In the summer season of 2017, our local New Hampshire Lakes-trained Lake Hosts
conducted almost 1,000 courtesy boat inspections. Also in the summer of 2017, New Hampshire Lakes
Association recorded several hundred incidents of boats attempting to enter a lake with suspect weeds or
animal life attached. In too many cases, the weeds were identified as invasive. In this period, on Crescent
Lake, we sent a handful of suspect weeds to the state Department of Environmental Services for inspection
and validation - thankfully none were categorized as invasive. In short, we were lucky.
You have undoubtedly met our dedicated Lake Hosts and volunteers conducting these very short duration
inspections of boat, trailer and (hopefully in those cases of anglers, fishing tackle) to ensure no “hitchhiking”
weeds or animals (snails, asian clams, zebra mussels) make their new home in Crescent Lake.
The Crescent Lake Association with our force of dedicated Lake Hosts is our LAST DEFENSE against
invasive species.
The reports across the state from lake associations bearing financial burdens to mitigate a new source of
invasive species are concerning. These lakes are now facing years of effort and financial uncertainty in a
unproven process of removing a fast-growing invasive plant or animal that may impact our ability to use the
waters, and puts a perception on local properties of the impact versus property values. Today, Crescent Lake
is (to the extent we can monitor and surveill) free of any invasive species. But we cannot afford the annual
cost alone to conduct inspection operations ourselves. We receive very small amounts from our local towns
ISSUE 24
ACWORTH-UNITY NH
SPRING 2018
of Acworth and Unity, and we apply annually for grant dollars from New Hampshire Lakes, though to majority
of the program costs are borne by Crescent Lake Association members.
For many years (decades, even), we have conducted numerous activities to reduce our exposure to aquatic
invasive species, though with “public access” we cannot staff our sole boat launch with trained Lake Hosts at
every hour (often very early mornings in the case of anglers) supporting our last line of defense.
So here’s where YOU and MUTUAL DEPENDENCY comes in. After Memorial Day and prior to the typical
“Schools Out!” date, we staff the boat launch on weekends and have kept this practice for many years. After
the 3rd week or so of June (the Schools Out! date), we begin full-week staffing, Monday through Sunday.
Hours are typically 8:00am to 6:00pm unless a holiday which may extend the end time to 7:30-ish pm. We
are dependent upon and thankful for our Lake Hosts and volunteers to provide this line of defense. Where
you can help us collectively is to make aware anyone (renters, friends, someone asking about great places to
fish...you get the idea) who wants to put ANY form of watercraft into Crescent Lake, that they do so A) at the
public boat launch on Crescent Lake Road, and B) try as much as possible to do so when Lake Host is
present.
Our annual grant dollars from New Hampshire Lakes is triggered by the total annual number of courtesy
inspections. More inspections = more grant dollars. When our Lake Hosts are busy, we’re being successful
in keeping Crescent Lake clean. Please given them your full cooperation, let them conduct the process they
have been trained for. And PLEASE - keep your watercraft clean not only by our standards, but yours. Check
your boats, check your props or fishing gear, or the nylon rope handles of your kayak...these are all places
where weeds or snails can latch onto. Check everything. And drain your boats before and after you visit any
lake or river. Please. The few minutes of effort ahead of time might completely erase years of effort to
eradicate a plant or animal species that finds a home here or somewhere else.
We depend upon you, our members and the public who love to visit and play on Crescent Lake to help us in
this sometimes imposing battle to keep weeds and unwanted animal life out of Crescent Lake. And PLEASE,
PLEASE, PLEASE do not introduce domestic animals (ducks, fish, anything that might reside in your home
aquarium) into ANY body of water.
New Hampshire state law (reciprocal to many New England states) prohibits the transportation of weeds or
animals that might infect another body of water. With some very practical and easy steps as defined above,
we can keep Crescent Lake clean, and you can enjoy the summer knowing we’re all driving toward a singular
goal: Supporting public access and maintaining a clean lake environment for all to enjoy. Thank you.

Boating Safety on Crescent Lake
Kevin Brenker, Boater
For business reasons I participate monthly in a very lively group called the Port Operators Group, consisting of U.S.
Coast Guard, MASSPORT, Boston Fire, Boston Police, Army Corp of Engineers, NOAA, Harbormasters up and down
the coastline of eastern Massachusetts as well as commercial entities, all having oversight into navigating Boston
harbor safely. If you have spent a summer day in/near Boston harbor,
you know the intricacies of various watercraft, along with aircraft arriving/
departing Logan International. It’s a pretty crowded place given the
activity and space. This summer float planes will have scheduled flights
from water-borne portals to the Cape and Islands adding exponentially to
the level of activity and potential for accident.
In some ways, here on Crescent Lake, we’re not all that different. Yes, in
previous years we’ve had float planes take off and land, but the recent
explosive nature of paddle-craft - kayaks, paddleboards, etc., along with
a typical representation of power boats, row boats and canoes is cause
for reminder: We’re a small lake. We can get easily congested. We
can get complacent. Accidents can happen.
This month at the Boston Port Operators Group, the U.S. Coast Guard offered statistics from the summer of 2017, and
while those specific numbers are not at hand of this writing, here’s the headline: Incident of Paddle-Craft
Accidents has Skyrocketed
Coast Guard reports dozens of accidents from people operating kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUP) with some
number of fatalities, usually from drowning. It seems somehow foreign that someone would expect to enjoy a summer
day in BOSTON HARBOR on a SUP or kayak with all that is going on around them. Add to that the incident of DUI
(you can be cited for DUI in a kayak, by the way) and simply not knowing the “rules” and the recipe for something
bad comes together quickly. We’re a small lake. We can get easily congested. We can get complacent.
Accidents can happen.
If an accident involving personal injury (or worse) occurs on Crescent Lake, we will be sequestered to using the lake
as we know it today. Regardless of what watercraft you choose:
Be safe - operate by USCG rules.
Be sober.
Give way.
Wear your PFD.
We all share a responsibility to make this a safe and enjoyable summer.

Everyone knows….it was a very long winter! ICE OUT declared April 29 2018 at

On May 5 this happened: Betsy Allen reports:
Team “CRESCENT LAKERS” proudly raised funds ($720!) and
awareness, joining the 626 participants and 89 volunteers in the
5K Steppin’Up To End Violence on May 5, 2018. It was a

continuing support for TurningPoints Network, for crisis and
support services available 24/7 to those who are affected by
domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking schools
throughout Sullivan County. TPN also provides services in our
local schools to educate our students on such topics as empathy
and anti-bullying, body safety, consent and healthy dating
relationships.
Thank you to all the Crescent Lakers who contributed!
We hope to continue this effort in May 2019 and hope that you will
consider being a part of this worthwhile community event

Both venues are fun summer traditions. Both venues support local business. Both
venues offer great music. Both venues are great country family events. See you
there!
Pizza night started in 2007 as a small gathering of friends and family. Over the
years it grown and changed, now attracting hundreds of guests every week of the
summer.! Pizza night is a benefit event and we give away all the profits to a different
local non-profit group every week.!

So, we know what to do on Saturday and Tuesday nights. But, if you are
looking for more to do off the lake:
Opportunities for active recreation activities abound, and you don’t have to travel far to experience them.
Below are some ideas, all rides and hikes I’ve participated in, and think are truly wonderful!
Biking
Northern Rail Trail - this flat, gravel bike path runs 57.6 miles from Lebanon to Boscawen. Plentiful parking at
the Lebanon trail head.
Long Trail Century Ride - takes place in June each year and benefits the Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports
programs. Various distances offered, ride begins and ends at the Long Trail Brewery.
Harpoon Point to Point Ride - takes place in August each year and benefits the Vermont Food Bank. This year
the ride will begin and end at Mt. Ascutney instead of the Harpoon Brewery, but Harpoon is still a sponsor and
will be serving up pints at the end of the ride. Distances include 25, 50, and 100 mile routes in addition to a 20
mile trail ride.
Tour de Taste - this pedaling picnic is a delightful event that runs on a Sunday in early September every year.
Sponsored by the Upper Valley Trails Association, the routes include a six mile ride around Lake Morey, a 21
mile route, or a 31 mile route. But it’s not just a ride through the countryside - every few miles there is a stop
for samples from local restaurants, and ice cream at the end!
Seacoast Ride - A great ride in September, bonus with this ride is that it includes two days of riding for one
price. It starts at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire and travels up and down the coastline from there
depending on the distance you choose to ride.
Maine Lighthouse Ride - Also in September, this ride begins and ends in Portland, ME. Depending on the
distance you choose, you may travel past up to 9 lighthouses. Beautiful scenery and not much elevation to
contend with.
Hiking Unity Mountain Trail - This 3.9 mile trail is relatively new and certainly close to home! It begins at the
Sullivan County Home parking lot, crosses 2nd NH Turnpike (there is another parking lot there), and
continues on to Mica Mine Road. There is a scenic overlook at the top of Unity Mountain, with a spectacular
view. If hiking in the fall, be sure to wear orange, as we came upon several hunters last year.
Gunnison Lake - Commonly referred to as “Goshen Ocean”, this is a hidden gem located off Route 31 in
Goshen. There is a well marked trail that goes around the lake and across the dam. Views are wonderful, the
backside of Mt. Sunapee is quite visible from the dam. After the hike, take off in your kayaks and do another
circle around, this time in the water. A great way to spend the day, and there are several places to swim and
picnic if you desire.
thanks, Linda Kahn for the above article!

DOES THE STORK BRING BABY
LOONS?
.......to all our friends and neighbors at the lake. As we all know our pair of
loons has returned to Crescent Lake this year. Well, we are happy to
announce that they are building a nest in our cove. The nest is in the grassy
peninsula when you enter the cove. This is a popular spot for kayakers and
people fishing so we want to get the word out to PLEASE AVOID THIS AREA
AND THE NEST. The *Loon Preservation Committee will be out in a few days
to post a sign at the boat landing and also floating signs at the cove to keep
boats and people away from the nest. The biologist from the preservation
committee has asked me to send out this email to spread the word and to
give the loons the space that they need to have a successful nesting with
babies. They have also asked that the firework display be moved further down
the lake away from the nest. !
Thank you for your help in getting this new out to everyone. If you have any
questions feel free to email me. !

*The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) was created in 1975
in response to concerns about a dramatically declining loon
population and the effects of human activities on loons.!
LPC’s mission is to restore and maintain a healthy population
of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health
and productivity of loon populations as sentinels of
environmental quality; and to promote a greater
understanding of loons and the larger natural world.

Loon Nesting Update - Yesterday, June 14,
Tim Perry, Betsy Allen, and I met with Sarah Cantwell (Loon Preservation Committee Field Biologist)
at Ray & Linda (Schettino) St.Sauveur’s house (80 CL Road). Sarah brought two floating signs and a
floating rope barrier to help protect the nesting area. Ray St. Sauveur drove his pontoon boat while
Sarah, Tim and Rich anchored the signage.
Linda has been observing the loons for several days and they built their nest on June 12. She
observed strange loon behavior (Sarah says they “pant”) and from that time on there has been a loon
sitting on the nest. Gestation is 28 days and Sarah will return around July 11 to see if the chicks have
hatched. She asked that if we see anything that concerns us, we should get in touch with her. Ray
St.Sauveur will make a sign for the boat launch area.
Dick Desbien loaned us extra floating rope to secure the area. and I took photographs to document
the effort.
Sarah says we should stay at least 100 yards away from the nest even though the signs and rope are
only at 50 ft. It is important that we keep kayaks and fishing boats, etc out of the 100 yard boundary.
New Hampshire law prohibits people from venturing inside the that boundary.
A few facts - We are the most southern lake that Sarah is monitoring. Because we now have a nesting
pair of loons, we have gone from a “Tier 3” lake to a “Tier 1” lake, in their rating system. The lake level
should not rise more than 1-2 inches or the nest will flood. LPC builds floating rafts to encourage loon
nesting and protection. They have 100 rafts in NH. She has 30 nests that she is watching this season,
which is double the amount from last year.
We are indeed fortunate to have a nesting pair of loons at Crescent Lake and it is up to all of us to
protect them.

The Loon Preservation Committee offers the following:
TIPS FOR VIEWING LOONS:
You can observe fascinating behaviors by maintaining a respectful distance and
allowing loons to focus on taking care of themselves and their chicks.
Boat slowly in the vicinity of loons and stop at least 150 ft away. The loons may
come closer or they may move away; please let them decide how close they
wish to be and please don’t pursue a loon or loon family for a closer view.
Use binoculars to observe loons without getting too close and causing them to
swim away.
The LPC also offers this facts about loons:
Ingested lead fishing tackle is by far the leading known cause of adult loon
mortality in NH. Visit fishleadfree.org for more information.
Loons can abandon their nest if approached too closely by people
It’s a lot of work to raise 1 or 2 loon chicks - please give the loon parents space
so they can take care of their chicks.

SADLY, WE BID FAREWELL TO TWO GREAT CRESCENT LAKE MEN.
GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN:
On December 10, 2017, Bob Spaulding passed to his “workshop in the sky”. Many Crescent Lakers had a
chance to visit with Bob last summer. His enthusiasm and memory was sharp as ever as he reminisced with
old friends and family. He spent many years on Crescent Lake and witnessed many changes. You may recall
the tribute given him by Poppy Scumas at the CLA annual meeting in 2015, noting how his inspiration created
many events on the lake, especially the annual picnic and canoe race. They spent many hours together,
plotting and planning. He also was instrumental in creating many snowmobile trails and the birth of Crescent
Lake Snowriders. He was featured in Trail Rider magazine “3,000 Miles on the Trail Alone” as he cataloged
many trails on his trail bike. Another passion was, of course, Beagle Trials and he spent hours at the
clubhouse in Unity. He and a buddy, Carl Fidelski, built “Carl’s Castle” at the top of Gove MT…many of us still
hike there. In his spare time he could be found in his workshop building adirondack chairs, birdhouses,
wishing wells, etc. Many of his creations can still be found around the lake. He moved to Florida several
years ago, built another workshop and where he made hundreds of wooden toys given away at Christmas
time to needy children. His visits here continued however, as his heart never left. He loved Acworth and
served on the Planning Board for several years.
His first cottage, “Rocky Knoll” stood between Rainbow Rock and “Hatetoleaveit”, (named by the then owner,
Marty Parker). He was an avid waterskier, canoer, fisherman, guitar player, hunter, snowmobiler, dancer, and
you-name-it. He longed for a cottage on the water and happened to witness Clinton Fogg nailing up a for sale
sign in the mid 60’s. They had a brief conversation and the sign came down. Eventually he moved
permanently to the lake from Chester VT. As
he aged, he moved to FL with his second
wife, Myrtle. Years of memories flooded the
family but the old camp came down and
today stands the full-time home built by Site
Specific and finished by Ray and Nancy
LeBlanc (Bob’s son-in-law and daughter).
Bob had such enthusiasm for anything new.
He faced each new project with true gusto.
Perhaps that was the reason for his
longevity….he always had so much he
wanted to do.
A military service will be held June 29th in
Boscawen, NH. He was a WWII Battle of
the Bulge survivor earning many awards,
among them a bronze star. Summer 2017. Bob reminiscing with Lorraine Dion.

DON MAYBERRY PASSED IN MARCH 2018
Dear Crescent Lake Association members and friends:!
This week we lost a close friend to Crescent Lake, our Association and the community at
large with the passing of Don Mayberry. Don has been part of the Crescent Lake
community since 1985 and had been very active for years with CLA as a valued member
of the Board of Directors as well as the Crescent Lake Regional Sno-Riders, in which he
also served as a past President.!
Don had an infectious smile and laugh and was one of the first people the Brenker family
met in 1999 when we arrived at Crescent Lake. As an early property owner in the
Shorewood Estates development, Don grew to love this small body of water and the
community and activities that thrive around it. As a member of the CLA Board, Don was
always engaged – ready to tackle any topic, and always prepared, usually with copious
notes that he researched ahead of time. Don was instrumental in raising not only
awareness of certain initiatives of interest to either CLA or the Sno-Riders club had focus
on, but in the fund raising that helped propel those projects to fruition. It seemed Don
always wanted to be outdoors, whether on his boat or sled, just staying productive
mentally and physically. Don’s energy and activities belied his 88 years, which he was
proud to often thumb his nose in the direction of the medical community…this guy knew
perhaps years ago that many of us are learning today: physical activity robs the chances
of aging disrupting an otherwise busy lifestyle. He was active to his very last day with us."
There are no current plans for
formal services, though we
hope as the warmer season
approaches we can pay
tribute to Don in some
appropriate manner. His
family has suggested for
anyone interested in
memorializing Don’s
contributions, the following
two organizations would
gladly accept a small
donation in Don’s honor:"
Crescent Lake Association"
Crescent Lake Regional Sno-
Riders Club Inc
(www.clrsr.com)"
We don’t know yet what happens to the spirit when the carbon-based body calls “time
out”, but I have only one singular, lasting image, having known Don for nearly 20 years:
riding his “cosmos” version of a Mustang convertible across the Milky Way in a bright
yellow shirt, sunglasses and huge smile. "
Bless you, Don. Until we meet again.!

Crescent Lake Chronicles is pleased to present our 1st annual
“LAKERS OF INTEREST”.
Nominated and accepted: TOM AND ASHLEY FARMEN
This editor interviewed them over dinner on June 14th (chocolate cookies for dessert)
Tom grew up in Stamford, CT and Ashley in Baltimore, MD. Tom met Ashley three times in college in 1973
according to Ashley; Tom says he does not remember! Tom claims he met Ashley for the first time on
Nantucket in the summer of 1975 and will never forget it!
They have two grown sons. Each are the youngest of three children.
Tom taught, coached and lived at the same boarding school, Rumsey Hall, Washington Depot, CT for 42
years, the last 31 of those years as Headmaster. Ashley taught at Rumsey Hall for 5 years and later worked
as Coordinator of Special Events and editor of all school publications. The School was like an extension of
their family.

ACWORTH-UNITY NH
SPRING 2018
Curious how they happened to buy a home in Unity, NH on North Shore Rd, I was told because they both
went to college in NH, there was a certain magnetism. Since they lived on campus at Rumsey, they wanted
to build some equity. They found the house and property that matched their search and purchased it in 1986.
Subsequently, they purchased their small lake cottage on Road’s End in 2011. They named their cottage
“Tucked In”. It is located on the East end, across from Perry’s and Caravan’s.
They retired in July, 2016 and became full-time residents, living between their “big house” on North Shore RD
and “Tucked In” on the lake.
When asked what accomplishment each were most proud, Tom said “creating opportunities for others and
spreading joy”. Smiling, Ashley replied “not getting Tom fired during the 42 years at Rumsey”! Tom would like
most to be remembered for being reliable. Ashley, her chocolate chip cookies!
When asked to describe Crescent Lake with one word, Tom answered “poetry”, Ashley said “comforting”.
On rainy lake days, Tom likes to tinker, write, and spend time outside. Ashley likes to get caught up on desk/
computer work and read. On those snowy days, Tom likes anything outside; snowboarding, xc skiing,
walking. He loves to read at the end of the day by the fireside. Keeping the wood stove burning and cruising
the frozen lake is Ashley’s preference.
They declined a favorite memory of the lake, instead saying that the spontaneity of the people is
unforgettable! When asked if they felt there were changes on the lake, they commented that it’s wonderful
that more people are moving here full-time. The potluck dinner parties in the winter get better and better.
There one concern, however,: bigger and faster boats on this little lake. When asked if they would change
anything at all with Crescent Lake, they chuckled and said they would give it a sandy bottom.
Typically, they spend their summer days at “Tucked In”. Tom likes to start the day with a swim, then work
around the cottage, grill on Saturday night, take sunset cruises each evening, tie up with friend’s boats on
Sunday afternoon and invent water games, then go to bed on Sunday night with a smile on his face. Ashley
loves to paddleboard, work in the gardens and gather/play with friends.
Because they can be seen cruising the lake for sunset each summer evening, they were asked “if a song
could suddenly play as you sit in your boat together awaiting the sun to set, what would it be?” The answer:
“The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra, music by Nelson Riddle.
In the winter, they “close up camp” and move up to the “Big House”. The days shrink, but they try to skate/
walk/snowshoe/xc ski the lake as often as we can, no matter the weather. He commented that it provides a
different perspective to walk where you swim!. Their nights are cozy by the woodstove.
They agreed that a perfect day is one without commitments but they still run out of time!
Eager to know, they were asked “is there something about each of you that you think very few people know?”,
Tom related that the first time he asked Ashley to marry him, she said “NO”. Then, a short two months later,
ISSUE 24
ACWORTH-UNITY NH
SPRING 2018
she proposed to him. He said “YES”. Ashley confessed that they did not know Crescent Lake existed when
they first purchased their home in 198, And back then, their deed even said the property’s location was
Crescent Lake North Road. As far as having something they wish everybody knew, the answer was “It’s good
to have a few secrets. We’ll keep ours.”
#1 on their bucket list is to travel to someplace brand new each year, hopefully with a sandy beach, warm
water, and uncrowded waves.
Nearing the end of the interview, Tom was asked if he would comment on his plan to write a book. He
summarized what we can expect: “Bessie’s Story - Watching the Lights Go Out” is a thoughtful collection
of essays about our charming, brave, unpretentious chocolate lab named Bessie who gradually ones her
eyesight. The book chronologically leads the reader from her original diagnosis of terminal blindness at age 4
through the gradual, 2-1/2 year transition to sightlessness. In the process, Bessie unwittingly became an
expert mentor and teacher for the high-wire act of growing older with grace and optimism. “Watching the
Lights Go Out” is best read in bits and pieces, like a pep talk for each day. There are numerous references
in the book to life on the lake. We expect “Bessie’s Story - Watching the Lights Go Out”t to be available in
bookstores and on-line later this summer.
Ending the interview, Ashley was asked if she would share her chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Here it is!

VALUABLE INFORMATION (PRINT AND SAVE)
Thank-you, Lonn Livengood!
I often get asked about what you can do around the lake to
your property without a permit. Here is a cut and paste from
the FAQ section of the NH Department of Environmental
Services Shoreland Website: What activities DO NOT
require a shoreland permit?
Many activities within the protected shoreland have been
identified as not requiring a shoreland permit because the
activity does not constitute construction, excavation or filling.
These activities include, but are not limited to:
• Trimming, pruning, and thinning of branches to the extent necessary to protect structures,
maintain clearances, and provide views.
• Maintenance of legal, existing, altered areas, such as mowing lawns, raking leaves and pine
needles, mulching landscaped areas and haying fields.
• Planting one or more trees within existing altered areas more than 50 feet from the reference
line with mechanized equipment.
• Planting of non-invasive vegetation and maintenance of existing gardens.
• Hand-pulling or use of hand tools to remove invasive species or other noxious or harmful
plants such as poison ivy, including the root systems, provided that any area exceeding 10
square feet without vegetation be replanted with non-invasive, non-harmful species.
• Placement of stepping stones, provided no root systems are removed to accommodate their
placement.
• Placement or installation of readily moved items such as picnic tables, lawn chairs, and swing
sets.
• Construction or installation of fences using hand tools.
• Construction of a single accessory structure, such as a shed, greater than 50 feet from the
reference line and is less than 150 sq ft in size.
• Maintenance, repair or modification of an existing driveway, including repaving, provided that
there is no increase in impervious area.
• Maintenance, repair or modification of an existing primary or accessory structure that does not:
1. Alter the footprint or impervious area of the structure.
2. For nonconforming structures erected prior to 1994 that do not meet the 50 foot primary
structure setback, extend living space closer to public waters.
3. Require, or result in, the alteration of previously unaltered areas.
4. Require, or result in, any excavation or filling within the protected shoreland
ISSUE 24
ACWORTH-UNITY NH
SPRING 2018
5. Exceed the criteria of the Shoreland Rule (Env-Wq 1405) associated with accessory
structures.
• Modifications to an existing structure that minimally changes the outside dimensions of the
structure, such as installing a skylight or dormer or putting new siding over old siding, provided
the project does not require excavation with mechanized equipment of require additional fill.
• Installing private water facilities such as a well including the trenching associated with
connecting the well to a residential dwelling.
• Forest management that is not associated with shoreland development or land conversion that
is conducted in compliance with RSA 227-J:9.
• Forestry conducted by or under the direction of a water supplier for the purpose of managing a
water supply watershed.
Agricultural activities and operations defined in RSA 21:34-a and as governed by RSA 430.
• Digging test pits for the purposes of determining suitability for wastewater disposal under RSA
485-A:29 relating to subdivisions or septic systems, provided there is no disruption of
groundcover within 50 feet of the shoreline and no test pits within 75 feet of the shoreline.
• Replacing utility poles or guy wires using mechanized equipment, provided that appropriate
siltation and erosion controls are used and all temporary impacts are restored.
• Digging test pits for the purposes of determining suitability for wastewater disposal under RSA
485-A:29 relating to subdivisions or septic systems, provided:
1. There is no disruption of groundcover within 50 feet of the reference line.
2. No test pits are dug within 75 feet of the reference line unless required in order to evaluate
eligibility for replacement under Env-Wq 1003.10.
• Use of hand tools, such as augers or tile spades, to install monitoring wells, piesometers and
flow meters , for:
1. Evaluating site conditions as necessary for the submittal of information required by a permit
application under RSA 482-A relating to wetlands, RSA 485-A:29 relating to subdivision of septic
systems, or RSA 485-A:17 relating to alteration of terrain.

EDITOR’S NOTE: I hope you enjoy this year’s Crescent Lake Chronicles. Please know that it belongs to
all of us, family and friends of CL property owners. Because we no longer have to absorb printing or postage
costs, the newsletter has no size restraint. Circulation is unlimited as well. This makes it a wonderful tool for
want ads, for sale items, rental listings. If it seems a bit late this year, I am sorry. I am on “lake time”.
New this year is an interview with A Crescent Laker of Interest. You may nominate a person/couple/family for
next year by simply emailing [email protected] .
As we look forward to another great summer on our favorite lake, please continue to RESPECT your
neighbors and the loons!
