Warren College Individual Studies Major (B.A. Only)
Warren College offers an Individual Studies Major. This major allows a student to pursue a coherent course of study
that is not formally recognized as a major at UC San Diego, but would otherwise meet all of the standards established by
the College and by the Academic Senate. Interested students must submit a written proposal explaining the merits of an
Individual major and why their educational goals cannot be accommodated within an existing major. The proposal must be
approved by a faculty advisor and then approved by the Warren College Provost/Executive Committee. In addition, the
following guidelines must be satisfied:
1. A student who entered as a freshman must have completed a minimum of 36 units of UC San Diego
coursework, including WCWP 10A and 10B. A student who entered as an upper-division transfer student must
have completed at least one quarter of work at UC San Diego, including WCWP 100.
2. Student must be in good academic standing and have a minimum 3.00 GPA
3. The major program must include: a minimum of twelve four-unit, upper-division courses from two academic
departments; with a minimum of four course offerings from one department.
4. All major courses except 195, 197, 198, and 199 must be taken for a letter grade. A minimum grade of C is
required for each course.
5. A total of no more than 12 units in 195, 197, 198, and 199 may be applied toward the major. 195 or 197 is
limited to no more than four units.
6. The Warren Individual Studies Major must satisfy residency requirements: nine of the twelve upper-division
courses must be completed at UC San Diego. Students must petition for review and approval of course work
taken outside of UC San Diego.
Applications Guidelines for Individual Studies Major
Application for the Individual Studies Major requires:
1. A two-page written proposal submitted by the student
2. A supporting statement from your designated faculty advisor
3. A list of prerequisite courses and proposed courses for the intended plan of study
All material must be submitted to the Warren College Academic Advising Office three quarters
prior to the student’s projected term of graduation.
Procedures
___ Complete the Individual Studies Major Proposal with the assistance of a designated faculty advisor.
___ Attach a Statement of Purpose, i.e., purpose of proposed major, related goals and objectives, and an
explanation of why the proposed program cannot be accommodated within existing UC San Diego
majors.
___ Obtain faculty advisor’s written statement of support and signature on the major proposal form.
___ Submit all materials to the Warren College Academic Advising Office.
